venture capitalist, and friends talk to nbc bay area tonight. the biggest of this week's storms is expected to hit the bay area this weekend. good evening. we begin tonight with the weather. another storm headed our way. experts say it could be the strongest of the storms to hit this week. the biggest concern in most areas is flooding. not only in the bay area but in the sierra, as well. we begin tonight with anthony in our weather center with a look at when this next storm is supposed to hit. hello, anthony. >> good evening, diane. long-time coming since we've seen this amount of rain in such a short amount of time. in fact, yesterday alone, lots of places including san francisco, santa rosa, even oakland set record rainfall amounts for yesterday alone. now, more rain is already on our doorstep. we are still under flash flood

watches and warnings. not only up against the coast but it does include san francisco, it includes napa and it also does include santa rosa. some of our hardest hit locations with a particular series of storms. you will notice more rain already starting to approach the coast, and this is just an appetizer of what's to come. we've looked at plenty of rain over the past four days. santa rosa, one of our top cities picked up over 5 1/2 inches of rain. san francisco, not too far behind. 2 1/2, to get down to the south bay, gilroy, 2 1/2 in san francisco topping out right at -- san jose, rather, at 1 1/2 now. we are watching more rain with this next system as you menged, diane. it's going to be very powerful. flash flood watches do mean that flash flooding is likely tomorrow. we're going to be telling you how much rain is going to fall. another thing that's very important, those rivers have been rising. we're going to detail all of that coming up. >> thank you, anthony. as you mentioned, people in the north bay are preparing for this

north storm as potential flooding in some areas. the national weather service issued a warning today projecting that the napa river will rise two feet above flood stage by tomorrow afternoon near the towns. and today in downtown napa the river is running. it took about 12 feet. that is well below flood level of 25 feet. that change can change very quickly with a flash flood. >> you know, tomorrow i think is the day that we're kind of worried about more than any day this week because it's the end of the biggest. supposed to be storming pretty bad. we're not too concerned. >> the city of napa has invested extensively in flood improvement. expected to keep the river inside the banks within city limits at least. the storm is in the sierras as well. as we mentioned, the coming storm is warm and it will likely rain in tahoe instead of snow. forecasters say the trucky river could reach flood stage by tomorrow night, putting riverside homes at risk. we will have a live report from trucky coming up later on in

this newscast. the rain is not unexpected this time of year but it does create challenges when it comes to outdoor activities. it isn't dampening the spirits at the union square ice rink in san francisco. skaters were out in force despite the gray skies and occasional downpours. >> it's the best way to get in the holiday spirit for christmas. got any gingerbread latte. ice skating in union square, under the tree, it's the best. >> the union square ice rink will be open through the holidays. for the latest on power outage, storm damage, and weather updates all day and all night, you go our website, nbcbayarea.com. the quiet community is still reabouting to this news that a resident was killed in his home this week. this is the first homicide in that community in decades. nbc bay ear's kimberly terry is there for us. >> reporter: diana, police here continue their investigation,

friends and family of that victim are warping the loss of their loved one who they identified. well-known millionaire, former owner of the famed winery. killed in his home yesterday. friends around neighbors say they're shocked and saddened by the news. it's first homicide in 40 years in the upscale neighborhood. the police say they got a call from his wife at about 1:40 yesterday morning, telling them somebody broke into the house, ran sacked it and she needed help. police arrived to find her beaten and her husband dead. >> he was kind of a man that lived life on his own terms. and always the center of attention, the life of the party. so i was just really surprised to hear that he was a victim. >> reporter: police have not said how he was killed. his wife was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. investigators say they're still looking into whether this crime was random or targeted and say

there could be as many as four suspects involved. live in los galos. >> thank you for the update. and new at 5:00, the t. san francisco zoo is forced to close early today because of a two alarm fire at a nearby building. the fire was reported around 1:00 today. it was contained in about an hour. about an hour ago that is. it appears to be at the old sly shacker pool building. the bool was a public saltwater swimming pool built in the 1920s and very popular back then. it was the largest swimming pool in the united states at one time. the zoo planning to reopen tomorrow morning on schedule. there are no reports of injuries or the cause of the fire, either. coming up next at 5:00, some members of the kansas city chiefs are trying to cope tonight after a player killed himself at the team stadium. we'll have the latest on that. also, our storm coverage continues with anthony slaughter right after the break.

this coming storm is causing concern in the asir as as well. that's because they're expecting rain rather than snow in most places. forecasters say the truckie river could reach flood stage by tomorrow night, putting riverside homes at risk. the weather channel's chris warren is joining us now near the river with the latest. hello, chris. >> hello to you, diane. not only does flood stage, major flood stage, expect we'd this river here, and you mentioned, the snow levels. that is huge. that's very big deal because snow levels are going to be so high, i mean, we're talking in some cases possibly 3 to 4,000 feet higher than where i am right now. the surrounding areas, instead of getting snow that would stay in the mountains and in the hills, as snow, will be falling as rain. that water will be going down into the local streams and the creeks and finding their way here into the river. along the way, also, taking some of that snow, meting some of that snow and bringing that into the river.

this is the truckie river. go up and show you we are very close to some of these homes. we've been out here throughout the day. and we were seeing some people doing what they've can to really try to protect their property. the home behind us over here, they've been here for 50 years. they see some of the worst of it, 97. they had the water go all of the way into their home and about halfway up the refrigerator. now, they're not expecting it to be that bad and we're not pecting it to be as bad as psz 97 by any means but they're getting ready. got the bobcat out here, pushing some rocks and dirt a little bit closer to the river bank. so that is a concern for many of the residents here in truckui, diane, and they are taking it seriously. the river is going to go up fast and quickly drop down below flood stage by monday. it's going to be a fast rise and a fast fall. >> thank you, chris. all the houses along the river, you mention the snow situation, what does that mean for the ski slopes? >> well, i like to snowboard.

driving up here from the bay area this morning up to donner summit, that's 7,227 feet, it was raining and it was windy. i cannot imagine that would be a good condition. i wouldn't want to go up there. and any rain you get on top of the snow will eat away the snow and eat away at the pack. so i would not imagine that the ski resorts are happy about that. >> not good up there, all right. chris warren reporting for us. thanks a lot, chris. the pro football world is reeling tonight from an apparent murder/s murde murder/suicide. 25-year-old jo van belcher shot and killed himself this morning minutes after fatally shooting his girlfriend. brian mooar has this report. >> reporter: after fatally shooting his girlfriend kansas city chief linebacker jovan belcher chose to end his own life at the stadium where his football dreams came true. >> as officers pulled up and began to park, they heard the gunshots.

>> reporter: belcher shot himself at the team's training facility after expressing his gratitude to his coach and general manager. >> the coaches said when he pulled up, he was -- they were never in danger. he never threatened them or anything. >> reporter: minutes earlier and five miles away belcher gunned down his girlfriend, the mother of his 3-month-old baby. >> there are a lot of people who are hurting. there's a young baby without a parent, or parents. >> reporter: now chiefs nans are asking questions that may never be answered. how can such a seemingly blessed life end so terribly. >> it's shocking. it's horrible. >> he had such an opportunity. i can't imagine what the families are going through right now there are team decided to go ahead as scheduled with sunday's home game against the carolina panthers, playing on despite a tragedy that hits so close to home. brian mooar, nbc news. >> the oakland raiders released

the rain did not stop the crowd from coming out to watch today's children's christmas parade in los galos. they bundled up to watch the show. organizers say the parade was going to happen rain or shine and they had both. those who attended say they loved the family tradition and the old-fashioned charm. >> we're just here to enjoy the parade and all the decorations and fun. >> fun in the rain. >> yeah. >> it's tradition. >> it is. >> it's a really good christmas tradition. >> organizers say this is the largest christmas parade in california. the tree lighting ceremony last night was canceled due to the rain. rescheduled for this friday. right now, we're going to check in on the weather. what is going on, anthony?

it's crazy. >> it is we've seen a lot of rain over the past four days. i want to give you a peek outside. this is the calm before the storm. we're not looking at any heavy rain. this is the palo alto. you will notice the roadways are slick. keep the headlights on and use caution on the roadways. already seeing the rain push back into the area. this is going to be the final push of rain as we head through the next 24 hours. you can see the coast really getting hammered from right around monterrey bay stretching up towards ft. bragg. that's where some of the heaviest stuff has fallen. this system is just getting going. in fact, this is the appetizer of what's to come. you will notice the heavy rain already starting to fall in san rafa rafael. just knot of san francisco. in fact, this is the heaviest batch of rain that we have in the viewing area right now. it's going to continue to work its way up, producing very heavy rain. this is just the beginning. in fact, we've already seen about a tenth of an inch with this rain today, to a quarter of an inch. here comes the main brunt of things. you can see from the satellite,

lots of clouds hop with this system. it's just getting sheer depart right into the jet stream and we're right in place to see another round of heavy rain. in fact, this is what we're looking at. starting tonight after midnight and continuing through tomorrow morning, one to three inches of rain expected across the bay. now, if you live in the north bay, that's where you could see upwards of four, possibly five to six inches, unbelievable amounts. none the less, we've already seen that amount over the past couple of days. another factor, the winds will be very gusty tomorrow. so all of the rain that's fallen on top of really very saturated soil, any strong wind gusts can really exacerbate this issue, specifically with winds gusting. that is tropical storm force. even a couple days ago we had hurricane force winds atop mount hamilton there. of course, we've been telling you all newscast long, the rivers really can't take this amount of rain in such a short amount of time. so tomorrow and to monday, we're looking at those rivers

cresting. here it goes, tomorrow, 4:00 in the morning, if you live in the north bay, may be going with thunder tomorrow morning. it's all progressing into the peninsula, the east bay. even into the south bay, as early as 7:00 tomorrow. if you're a late sleeper like i sam, when i'm off, you're going to miss a lot of this. look what happens. 10:00, we're looking at sunshine in the north bay. so this is going to be a very quick blow. and by the afternoon, even in the south bay we're talking about, yes, sunshine. but again, you heard earlier, and the newscast that these rivers that are going to rise is going to be very quick and very quick decline as well. here it is. russian river, you will notice our normal level is around five feet. look at what's happening with all of this rain. already at 24 feet. look what's going to happen monday. expected to crest 35 feet, which would put that particular location right at a moderate flood stage, impacting some of the secondary roads in that city and also napa, the napa river,

very latest, right at 12 feet. expected to crest right around 26.7 feet and that would come tomorrow and into tomorrow night. and look how fast it falls. back to where we should be for this time of year. and really, for any time of year, backed by tuesday. it's going to be a very quick rise and quick fall. if you do live here the river or any creek, you definitely want to make sure you're paying attention tonight and tomorrow and tomorrow night as well. here we go. tomorrow's temperatures, cool. definitely need that jacket. no big surprise there. on the seven-day forecast, here we are. 62. tomorrow, flood threat is going to be the highest through the middle part of the day. by tomorrow afternoon, i mentioned, we're going to be looking at sunshine. were bizarre. almost midwestern kind of weather where we get the strong blows of rain and then back to seeing sunshine. with the bay, and winter time, this is the time of year we'll see that rain because even looking at the seven-day forecast, tuesday into wednesday, more showers on the way. but the good news, not flooding
